Need KIPS Rating Tips?
The latest additon to the KIPS Library Resources is the KIPS Clarifications Manual, generously shared by KIPSters at the Univeristy of Nebraska Medical Center. It offers examples for each of the ratings for the 12 KIPS behaviors to help you give an accurate assessment of parents' behaviors during parent-child play. If you're puzzled about how to rate one of the KIPS items, this may be just the guide you need. Also, this is a great resource to share with your team to strengthen the reliability of your ratings for program evaluation.
Co-author, Rosie Zweiback explains how they use KIPS:
At the Interdisciplinary Center for Program Evaluation we evaluate a state-wide early childhood home visitation project that serves over 550 families with children from birth to age 3. We use a variety of measures to determine child and family outcomes. One goal of the project is to help families improve their interactions with their children. Home visitors videotape parents playing with their children twice a year. We use the KIPS framework to score the interactions and provide feedback on strengths and suggestions for next steps. We have seen parent-child interactions improve significantly over time and by time two, over three fourths of the parents demonstrate high quality skills in building relationships with their child.
